Gonna answer you here in English. Understand Finnish but have a hard time writing in it. I relate to this. I'm Swedish and have been in Brazil for some time. I've hated when people have asked me how long I have been here, because I know they are then judging my answer to how good my Portuguse is. And I always feel like explaining why my level is the way it is. But people are generally not so interested in that, but rather then just put you in some box. And yes, I agree, langauge learning is very complex, it's a whole process of how integrated you are, where you're focus is, and there are so many different ways to learn it than going through some grammar book or taking a class

Moi Irina! Kiitos sun videosta :) Tätä samaa olen huomannut tapahtuvan myös Alankomaissa, kun puhun hollantia. Juuri tuo vertailu ja "tuomitseminen" saattavat jarruttaa oppimista, sillä jokainen oppii omaan tahtiin eikä sitä tarvitse lokeroida hyvään tai huonoon. Itse olen oppinut kuuntelemalla ja yrittämällä. En käynyt kursseilla juuri sen takia, että koen kirjaoppimisen aika tylsäksi. Ja kun kuuntelen ja elän tässä kieliympäristössä, kieli muotoutuu mehukkaaksi ja omaan suuhun sopivaksi. Tykkään oppia pikkuhiljaa ja "tarpeen mukaan". Musta oli tosi kiva kuunnella sinua puhumassa suomea. Olisiko sulla jotain vinkkiä mun hollantilaiselle puolisolle, että miten suomenkielen oppiminen voisi olla hauskaa tai helpommin lähestyttävää? Very interesting take on these. I like your descriptions and think they're very well thought out and described, except for a teeny tiny disagreement with the inhaled "joo" and "nii". I'm not sure if it's a regional thing, or even smaller "my group of friends act this way"-thing, but I've come to associate this inhaled version of "joo" and "nii" to a sense of impatience. Like I agree with you, but please get to the point or oh my god I know this already and agree, tell me something I don't know. So inhaled versions of this are less positive in connotation, where the exhaled versions are positive and reinforcing. Also quite funny that the YT algorithm decided to present this to me three years after it was put up. I wonder why. Regardless, interesting content!

I have no words to say how much I thank you. I've been learning Finnish for 10 years with my ups and downs, but for the last couple of years it's been one really deep hole... You illustrated this perfectly with that "crossing the river", I've been feeling this way for so long and I have no idea what to do. I dream about speaking Finnish fluently, but it's just like a giant failure... It's so heart-warming to know it's not only me struggling. I'm gonna try and try, and try till it finally clicks. Every languages are useful. If you feel the need and want to learn a specific language, go for it, you'll benefit from it and thanks for the internet, you'll easily find people to talk to in the language you want to learn, and find a good "use" to the language :)

Nice to see your face again, Irina! I understand where you're going with this and maybe you're onto something. What if we could learn enough to start using the language in everyday life? Then as we use it, wouldn't it pretty much go forward on it's own? Great conversation starter!

Having a goal of where you want to get is good in that it gets you to hold a standard for yourself that you can apply in your general study, however expectations in relation to that goal pr even just spending too much time doting on the idolisation of it, I think, is inherently unhealthy simply because your engaging with what becomes a superficial infatuation of who or what you want to be, made superficial by the fact you are no longer enjoying or developing the journey you are embarking on but rather spending time with your head on the clouds.

Подскажите, пожалуйста, есть вопрос, на который никто лучше Вас не ответит: Изучаю финский язык почти 7 месяцев (хожу на курсы в СПб, занимаюсь в среднем 1,5 часа в день, без учёта курсовых занятий, суомен местари 1 прошёл, суомен местари 2 - в процессе), владею английским С1...... так вот, насколько эффективно и правильно было бы изучать финский, с использованием английского (или на английском) далее, когда освоен материал суомен местари (ч.1 и ч.2) и есть базовое понимание, скажем так, "базовой структуры финского kirja-kieli"........ Поделитесь, пожалуйста, опытом..........заранее спасибо.

Tuo kysymys ei valttamatta ole niin kirjaimellinen vaan saattaa vain olla kohtelias tiedustelu ihmetykseen loistavasta Suomenkielestasi. Henkilokohtaisesti olen taysin samaa mielta kanssasi aiheesta. Englantia opin katsomalla televisiota ja vertailemalla puhuttua englantia seka kaannettya tekstia. Lukiossa englanninkielentaitoni oli parempi kuin opettajien vaikken ollut koskaan "opiskellut" sita. Kaiken kukkuraksi aidinkieleni on Ruotsi. Kielioppi on minulle yhta vieras kaikilla kielilla. :)

hyvä irina! just näin se menee kieliä voi oppia monella eritavalla ,älykkäät oppivat vieraita kieliä opiskelemattakin esim, jos asuvat jossain muualla maassa kun synnyinmaassa,se vaan tarttuu siellä päähän ajankanssa. ! tseppiä elämääsi!

Hi! I’ve been learning Finnish for about 4 years now and it felt like the easiest journey of learning a language. I’ve been also learning French in school for about 8 years and I’m still unable to speak fluently without having to think of what I want to say. So I have learned much more Finnish in 4 years than French in 8 years. My explanation for that is: I was ”forced” to learn French without really being interested. And my interest for the Finnish language was very big. For sure I had some struggles (and I still have) but I always saw a progression which gave me the motivation to learn more. Instead looking at the grammar and being lost, I saw it more as a discovery, which was very interesting. Now I still struggle with some parts of the grammar, but those aren’t as important because I am still understood. The most important is that you can speak freely without translating in your brain. And of course being able to interact with other people. I really like your videos, continue with that! Greetings from Switzerland!
